Anita Walsmit Sachs Jansen Florilegia Artist

b. Den Haag, The Netherlands 1948

Anita is head of the Art Department and is the Scientific Illustrator at the National Herbarium Nederland, part of the University of Leiden. She studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in The Hague, where she trained as a fashion designer and art teacher. Her botanical work is held in collections including the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, and the New York State Museum.

Anita received two Gold Medals from the Royal Horticultural Society and an award for Best Botanical Artist. She won the Margaret Granger Award and a Certificate of Botanical Merit at the Society of Botanical Artists and she tutors their distance learning programme. In 2006 Anita founded the Dutch Society of Botanical Artists.

Working in watercolour, oil, pen and ink, Anita says that nature forms her source of inspiration; she has a great love for detail, expression of texture and symbolism.
